2007 Thunder Road Marathon
December 8, 2007
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: BIG CROWD, BEAUTIFUL WEATHER FOR 2007 THUNDER ROAD MARATHON Charlotte, NC – Picture perfect weather and great support from volunteers and neighbors, area businesses and sponsors made the 2007 Thunder Road Marathon a success Saturday. Nearly 5,500 runners entered this year’s marathon, half-marathon, marathon relay and 5K events. Registration has nearly quadrupled since the inaugural Thunder Road Marathon just three years ago, with runners coming in from 47 states and Canada. Runners had high praise for the event’s organization, the increased fan support along the way, and the beauty of the race course itself, which winds through some of the city’s most historic and eclectic neighborhoods before finishing in Uptown Charlotte. “We could not have been more pleased with the turnout and the many positive responses we got,” said Tim Rhodes, race director for the Thunder Road Marathon. “We want to continue to produce the kind of event that’s not just a good time for the runners, but also a good thing for the community.” Mike Aldrink of Columbus, OH won the Thunder Road Marathon in 2:39:58, besting his nearest competitor by just over seven minutes. Pineville’s Megan Hepp took the women’s title and was the second overall finisher with a time of 2:45:10. Tamas Kovacs of High Point, NC won the Half Marathon in 1:07:55. Women’s winner Zika Ray of Blowing Rock, NC finished in 1:19:25. Both half marathon winners posted faster times than last year’s winners. Charlottean Julia McGarth was the women’s winner in the Presbyterian Hospital 5K Jingle Jog with a time of 20:19. Daniel Yeakley of Locust was the men’s 5K winner in 17:23.
